Searching the Site

How can I find what I am looking for on the website?
There is a general overview of what is available on the website in the Site Index. There is also an Index by Subject for art topics discussed in the Explore & Learn section of the site. The Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History provides information by place, theme, and time period.

How can I search the site?
There are several ways to search the website.

i) The Search box in the lower left side of the Home Page allows you to do a site-wide search using keywords or phrases.

ii) The section of the site devoted to the Museum's online Collection allows you to search for a particular work of art. Select "Search the Collection" in the upper right side of the pages in this section. You can search the entire online collection, the Provenance Research Project (a list of all European paintings in the collection with incomplete provenance for the Nazi era), just the Museum's collection of more than 2,500 European paintings, or just the Museum's collection of more than 3,100 American Paintings and Sculpture.

iii) You can search the Met Store for products and publications by using the Search box in the lower left side of the pages in this section.

iv) You can search for events and programs by date, type (e.g., Family Programs), or subject (e.g., Asian Art) by selecting "Search for Events" in the upper left side of the online calendar.

v) The Explore & Learn section (which includes a vast array of educational features related to the collection and exhibitions) allows you to search by key words and phrases using Search Explore & Learn located in the upper left side of the pages of this section.

How should I modify my search in order to get good search results?
For optimum search results, consult the Search Tips in the following sections: the Collection; the Met Store; the online calendar; and Explore & Learn.
